But she loves you
So it’s two against the world

Between Representational And Nonrepresentational Art Lies That Which Is Abstract. This Is Not The Popular Definition. Abstract And Nonrepresentational Are Habitually Considered To Be Synonymous. Paintings on paper.
In preparing for the 2013 exhibit at the Morrison Gallery Jonathan located these works on paper from 1979.
After restricting his pallet to steel grays and white on white from 1976-'78 these herald a return to brilliant color yet seemingly acknowledge their immediate predecessors starkness: The subject matter often suggests winter's minimalistic beauty and a number of the titles reflect that. So many of the effects tried during the creation of these paintings have since become part of his lexicon.

And I hope it's gonna be a long, hot summer
And the light of love will be burnin' bright
And I wish I been out in California
When the lights on all the Christmas trees went out
But I been burnin' my bell, book and candle
And the restoration plays have all gone 'round
It sure been a cold, cold winter

And the fields has all been brown and fallow
And the springtime take a long way around

The Vampyres
Work on The Vampyres began in 1974 with a tinted drawing. Black and white drawings of photographic precision followed in the eighties culminating in the first of four life-sized paintings begun on New Years Eve 1989-'90. These are in eye shadow on mirror capturing the ephemeral, otherworldly nature of the subjects physical existence. To Jonathan they have little-- if anything-- to do with the craze that vampire mythology enjoys today. They serve as a philosophical metaphor, representing a suspension of blind faith, and as a pursuit--- wherever that pursuit may lead. The title of the work Church and science is telling.
Have you not heard of that madman who lit a lantern in the bright morning hours, ran to the marketplace, and cried incessantly: "I am looking for God!-- I am looking for God!"
Something kind of hit me today/I looked at you and wondered if you saw things my way
As many of those who did not believe in God were standing together there, he excited considerable laughter. "Have you lost him, then?" said one. "Did he loose his way like a child?" said another. Or is he hiding? Is he afraid of us? Has he gone on a voyage? or emigrated?
People will hold us to blame/It hit me today/It hit me today
Thus they shouted and laughed. The madman sprang into their midst and pierced them with his glances.
We're taking it hard all the time/Why don't we pass it by? Just reply, you've changed your mind/We're fighting with the eyes of the blind/Taking it hard/Taking it hard
"Where has God gone?" he cried. We have killed him, you and I. We are his murderers.
Like Spearing Fish in a Barrel.
But how have we done this? How were we able to drink up the sea? Who gave us the sponge to wipe away the entire horizon? What did we do when we unchained the earth from it's sun? Whither is it moving now? Whither are we moving now?
Yet now
We feel that we are papers,
Choking on you nightly
They tell me "Son, we want you,
Be elusive but don't walk far".
Away from all suns? Are we not perpetually falling? Backward, sideward, forward, in all directions? Is there any up or down left? Are we not straying as through an infinite nothing? Do we not feel the breath of empty space?
Enlightened.
Something Kind Of Hit Me Today/I Looked At You And Wondered If You Saw Things My Way
TheSonTheSunTheSonTheSunTheSon.
Hope.
Has it not become colder? Is it not more and more night coming on all the time? Must not lanterns be lit in the morning? Do we not hear anything yet of the noise of the gravediggers who are burying God? God is dead. God remains dead for we have killed him. How shall we murderers of all murderers console ourselves?
For we're breaking in the new boys,
Deceive your next of kin
For you're dancing where the dogs decay
You're just an ally of the leecher
That which was the holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet possessed has bled to death under our knives.

Here the madman fell silent and again regarded his listeners; and they too were silent and stared at him in astonishment. At last he threw his lantern to the ground and it broke and went out.
"I have come too early," he said then; "My time has not yet come."

Sculptural Paintings.
.
At What Point Does Painting Become Sculpture? At A Depth of 12 Millimeters? 6 Millimeters? Less? More? While I've Always Considered These Works Paintings Increasingly People Refer To Them As Wall Sculpture Or Painted Sculptural Reliefs: A Trend, Possibly. Are Van Gogh's Heavily Impastoed Works Safe From Re-Definition?
I Suspect They Lie In A Netherworld Between The Two. By The Way, I Am aware That Van Gogh Should Have A Small 'V': It's This Style Of Typeset Which Capitalizes Every Word; Another Quandary.
